WSR Narrative Review |

Story Synopsis:
The Underneath is a noir-ish thriller from Steven Soderbergh, the director best known for his award-winning debut film Sex, Lies & Videotape. Again, deception and jealousy are the prime concerns in this complex story, based on the 1949 film Criss Cross. Peter Gallagher plays a reformed chronic gambler who hasn’t completely expunged the urge to take awfully big risks. Once home from rehabilitation, he takes a job driving an armored truck and becomes embroiled with his ex-wife (Allison Elliott), who has become involved with a violence-prone club owner.
LaserDisc Picture:
The Panavision® frame is 2.32:1. The picture is sharp and detailed exhibiting an interesting use of color filters and vivid colors. Fleshtones are natural, shadow detail is good and blacks are deep and solid. There is virtually no noise or artifacts for excellent quality.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack has a well recorded music score with subtle surround ambiance, natural dialogue, and effective Foley effects.
