WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Vigilante is a graphically violent, action-packed thriller from director William Lustig (Maniac). The film was a significant player in the sub-genre of violent revenge thrillers that were popular in the late 70’s and early 80’s. The plot involves your archtype lone man who seeks vengeance for the slaughter of a loved one amidst crooked bureaucrats, ineffective police, mafia lords and assorted violent criminals. Protests at the court’s decision does not bring justice and the man joins a vigilante force that goes on a bloodletting spree for revenge. The film is laden throughout with bloody shootings, car chases, explosives and brutal beatings all set against the streets of NYC.

LaserDisc Picture:
For this first-time LaserDisc release Lustig restored the film to a new unrated Director’s Cut in it’s original 2.35:1 theatrical aspect ratio. The source element is a low-contrast print that generally looks good despite some picture quality inconsistencies. A running commentary features the director and cast members discussing the production.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound, dubbed from the Dolby Stereo printmaster, is dynamic and in stereo, with ex-cellent directional and surround effects.
