WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Mother Night is an ambitious thriller adapted from Kurt Vonnegut’s novel. Because of his status among the Nazis, American playwright Howard W. Campbell, Jr. (Nick Nolte) is confronted by an American government agent (John Goodman) who seduces him into becoming an allied spy with the Nazi party. Escaping capture as the Third Reich crumbles and returning to America, Campbell is tormented by his shocking past—is he a hero, a villain or both?

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1, exhibits an excellent grayscale that is sharp and detailed with excellent shadow delineation. There are inconsistencies throughout the color sequences with excellent exterior color fidelity, but oversaturated and orangish interiors. Some noise, grain and overenhancement is apparent.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is nicely produced with a character that is quietly rendered through superb dialogue and precise Foley and ambiant effects. The music score is beautifully rendered throughout with excellent fidelity and imaging. Surround envelopment is subtle, but effective.
