Based on the novel by Henry James, The Portrait Of A Lady intoduces the boldly independent Isabel Archer (Nicole Kidman), as she rejects a most lucrative marriage proposal in favor of her hunger to experience the world—stunning her suitor and her relatives in old-world England. Isabel is manipulated by her duplicitous friend Madame Merle (Barbara Hershey), and marries the devious Gilbert Osmond (John Malcovich), but soon learns the dark truth involving her generous inheritence.

LaserDisc Picture:
The Panavision® Scope 2.35:1 picture exhibits natural color fidelity with warm colors, deep blacks and accurate fleshtones. Images are generally sharp and detailed with mediocre shadow detail and minor noise and artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is a delicate mix of subtle surround effects and natural sounding dialogue that is nicely integated spatially. Ambiant effects are subtly reproduced with good spatial character and stereo soundstaging. The music score is well recorded with excellent imaging and depth.
