WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on a screenplay by Robert E. Sherwood & Leonardo Bercovici, The Preacher’s Wife is similar to Henry Koster’s The Bishop’s Wife from 1947. Denzel Washington stars as Dudley, a charming angel called to Earth to help a struggling young minister (Courtney B. Vance) and his beautiful wife (Whitney Houston) save their marriage and their neighborhood church from the wrecking ball.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1, exhibits excellent color fidelity with warm colors, natural fleshtones and deep solid blacks. Images are sharp and detailed with only the slightest noise apparent.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 soundtrack is problematic throughout, sounding slightly out-of-sync with the picture in some scenes. There is an audible hum that is not heard on the PCM matrix version. Dialogue on both versions sounds muffled, either due to close micing or poorly produced ADR. The music score is generally well recorded with the discrete version slightly wider in soundstaging and preferred for its imaging and clarity
