WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel by Ira Levin, The Stepford Wives offers a chilling tale of a picture perfect New England town where every other car is a station wagon and the women who drive them are dedicated to their housework—shopping, cleaning and preparing meals for their husbands. Walter Eberhart (Peter Masterson) moves his wife, Joanna (Katharine Ross), and family to Stepford for its quiet community and good schools. But the independent Joanna quickly discovers a dark secret behind the Men’s Association. The members’ wives are all robotic drones—polite, leisurely housecleaners with mysteriously spotless homes. When her best friend (Paula Prentiss) becomes just like the rest, Joanna tries desperately to save herself from becoming one of the Stepford wives.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture looks dated with greenish-yellow fleshtones and deteriorated color fidelity and discolored blacks. Images are sometimes soft, while other times are generally sharp and detailed. Slight noise and minor artifacts appear on this 1.75:1 transfer.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished mono with sometimes distorted dialogue
