WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Two-time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks makes his directorial debut with That Thing You Do!—a comedy he also wrote. It follows a young 1960s rock band called The Wonders, whose popular song “That Thing You Do!” is about to make history. Although their first gig is in a spaghetti joint, it isn’t long before The Wonders land a recording contract, a state fair tour and a trip to Hollywood.

LaserDisc Picture:
The matted 1.85:1 picture exhibits inconsistent color fidelity that has an unnatural quality with somewhat greenish fleshtones and often undersaturated colors. Sometimes images seem out of focus with slight noise apparent. Shadow detail is good although there is an overall washed-out quality.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The discrete Dolby® Digital soundtrack has a slightly wider frontal soundstage than the matrix PCM. Dialogue always sounds natural with superb spatial integration on both versions. Surround envelopment is both subtle and aggressive, sometimes reaching below 25Hz, while the music and venues supply the spatial experience. This is an extremely well recorded musical presentation that gets better and better as The Wonders’ confidence and playing abilities improve.
