WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Nick Cassavetes’ mother Gena Rowlands shines in Unhook The Stars as Mildred, a widow desperately seaching for a purpose in life after her troublesome daughter (Moira Kelly) moves out. When her trash-talking next-door neighbor, Monica (Marisa Tomei) desperatley asks Mildred to watch her young son J.J. (Jake Lloyd), Mildred forms an understanding bond with both mother and son. In return for Mildred’s kindness, Monica takes her for a walk on the wild side. Filled with warm comic relief, Unhook The Stars is a second coming-of-age drama for this modern-day widow seeking a new future in a delightful true-to-life tale.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1, exhibits natural fleshtones, slightly oversaturated color fidelity and deep blacks. The vivid colors are pleasing, nevertheless. Images are sharp and detailed with excellent shadow detail. Slight noise is sometimes apparent.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack’s spatially integrated dialogue is refreshingly natural. Some of the quiet interior scenes have a distracting low level deep bass presence. The music score is nicely presented with subtle surround
