WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Two unlikely detectives (Freeman and Pitt) are assigned to an investigation that draws them deeper and deeper into the twisted world of a cunning and meticulous criminal (Spacey). He is methodical, exacting and grotesquely creative. Each of his murders are based upon the Seven Deadly Sin: Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Lust, Pride, Envy and Wrath. As each new victim is discovered, the detectives must combine their collective experiences to track the trail of a killer bent on seeking attrition for society’s sins.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture is the same transfer as the New Line version (ID3364LI) reviewed in Issue 19. Mastered at 2.32:1, this transfer is brighter than the intended overall dark character of the film, but is sharp and detailed with excellent color fidelity and excellent shadow detail and contrast.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The DTS® Digital Surround soundtrack dramatically resolves low level ambiant effects better than Dolby® Digital, as can be heard in Chapter 10’s “Hitting The Books,” delivering a greater sense of soundfield spatiality. The sound character is also consistently smoother sounding in the DTS presentation, compared to the thinner sounding Dolby Digital soundtrack.
