WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Dern stars as Freeman Lowell, a dedicated botanist in charge of a “space freighter” in the year 2001. Earth’s atmosphere has become too polluted to support life and vast geodesic domes housing the few remaining forests are tugged millions of miles into space by freighters for preservation. When the program to restore the forests on Earth is destroyed, Lowell defies the order to return, kills the crew members who resist and navigates the ship and its biospheres deeper into space. The film poses a simple question, but the answers are as vast and complex as the universe.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1, is generally sharp and detailed with excellent shadow delineation and contrast. Color fidelity is naturally rendered with vivid colors, accurate fleshtones and deep blacks. Some slight noise is apparent, but there are virtually no artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished monaural that sounds dated.
