WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Another classic from the acclaimed director/producer duo, the Coen brothers, Miller’s Crossing is portrays the dark underground world of big city crime lords in the 1920s. The calculating Tom Reagan (Gabriel Byrne) is an Irish mobster who finds himself at a crossroads between his loyalty to mob boss Leo (Albert Finney) and his dangerous romance with local socialite Verna. A violent war engages with a competing mafia leader when Verna’s low-life brother (John Turturro) interferes with the gang’s boxing match profits.

LaserDisc Picture:
Matted at 1.75:1, the picture presents generally good color fidelity with natural fleshtones, but blacks are undefined. Images are sometimes wanting in sharpness and detail, but other times are extremely sharp. Exterior scenes look natural, but interiors seem oversaturated with muddy shadow detail. Noise and artifacts are apparent.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is slightly bright, though spatial dimension is generally good with directional sound effects. There is an ambiance that produces a nice spatial surround presence throughout.
