WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Foreign. Based on the novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley” by Patricia Highsmith, Purple Noon stars matinee model Alain Delon as Tom Ripley, an angelic-looking young American whose talents for everything but holding down a job make him a favorite of the social set. When a concerned father recruits him to travel first class, all expenses paid, to bring back his errant son Philippe Greenleaf (Maurice Ronet)—Tom accepts. The two young men enjoy the good life in Italy until Tom finds his money source cut off and finds a more sinister way to maintain his lifestyle.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture is unnatural looking with oversaturated fleshtones, rich colors and deep undefined blacks. Sometimes images are soft and look “milky,” bleeding into their backgrounds, but are generally sharp. Contrast and shadow detail is poor and undefined, with grain and noise apparent throughout. Subtitles are cut off the bottom of widescreen monitors. The measured aspect ratio is 1.68:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is undistinguished monaural with distorted ADR-manufactured dialogue and a poorly rendered music score that is forward and unnatural.
