WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
(Iranian) Winner of the Best First Film category at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, The White Balloon is a purely delightful story based on an original idea by Parviz Shahbazi. Directed with delicate precision, this charming story follows the adorable seven-year-old Razieh (Aïda Mohammadkhani in an innocently spellbinding performance) as she sets out before the New Year to buy a pretty goldfish with the last of her mother’s money. But when she accidentally drops the money down a sidewalk storm drain, she tries desperately to persuade several passers-by to help her retrieve it. To all outer appearances, The White Balloon is a simple tale, but beneath the innocence lies touches of poverty, child abuse and racial prejudice. This extraordinary film is sure to please all who wish to experience its poetic simplicity.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.66:1 picture exhibits generally good color fidelity with natural looking fleshtones. Images are generally sharp and detailed with mediocre shadow detail and contrast. Overall, the picture has overly bright exposure. Subtitles can be read on widescreen monitors, except for a minor cut off of the second line.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is distorted and undistinguished monaural.
