WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the part-fact, part-fiction book by Ted Berkman, Cast A Giant Shadow tells a spectacular war story and passionate romance during Israel’s heroic 1947-48 struggle for independence. When American Jew and World War II hero David “Mickey” Marcus (Kirk Douglas) gets involved by becoming a military advisor for the new state of Israel, he overcomes skeptics—an Israeli officer (Yul Brynner), an American General (John Wayne) and a beautiful Israeli revolutionary (Senta Berger). His compassion and drive for Israel soon lands him the title of general of the country—the first in 2,000 years. Frank Sinatra stars in a cameo role as a happy-go-lucky pilot.

LaserDisc Picture:
The Panavision® Scope picture, framed at 2.32:1, exhibits a dated look with weak blacks, slightly undersaturated colors, but generally natural fleshtones. Images are wanting in sharpness and detail, some scenes seeming slightly out of focus. Noise

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished mono with forward distorted dialogue.
