WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel by Barbara Michaels, The Crying Child is a haunting story about a young woman who becomes delusional after the tragic loss of her child. Madeline (Mariel Hemingway), and her husband Ron (George DelHoyo), retreat to their family’s 19-century cottage on a small island to recover after the baby’s death. While there, Madeline becomes increasingly terrorized by her thoughts and memories of her lost child. With the help of her friend Jo (Finola Hughes), and the local doctor, Madeline embarks upon a haunting journey to discover a secret to her past that was buried with her family long ago. Revealing that hidden past puts the group in a dangerous position.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 picture, although sometimes too dark or contrasty, exhibits natural color fidelity with accurate fleshtones, rich and warm colors and deep, solid blacks. Images are sometimes wanting in sharpness and detail with generally good shadow detail and contrast. Noise and artifacts are apparent.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is loud, with a sound pressure level above reference. Dialogue is forward and wanting in spatial integration. The music score is nicely recorded.
