WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on “Be Ready With Bells And Drums,” by Elizabeth Kata, A Patch Of Blue was nominated for five Academy Awards® in 1965, with Shelley Winters winning the Oscar® for Best Supporting Actress. Elizabeth Hartman stars as 18 year-old Selina D’Arcey, accidentally blinded as a child, and forced to live a secluded and imprisoned life inside her family’s cramped tenement apartment. When her grandfather (Wallace Ford) takes her on a rare visit to the park, the occasion becomes even more special when she meets Gordon Ralfe (Sidney Poitier)—a gentle man who teaches Selina valuable lessons to help make her dark life a little easier. But when she falls in love with him, her racist mother (Winters) declares that their relationship cannot continue if she chooses a black man over her family. A Patch Of Blue is an important film that touches on a controversial subject even by today’s standards.

LaserDisc Picture:
The Panavision® Scope 2.32:1 black and white picture exhibits a poor grayscale that is often overly bright. Images are generally sharp and detailed throughout. Shadow detail is mediocre and there are artifacts apparent with minimal noise.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished and distorted monaural.
