WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
(French) Thieves is an erotic psychological thriller that explores the wages of repression starring the legendary French actress Catherine Deneuve. Daniel Auteuil stars as Alex, a brooding detective, long estranged from his family, but compelled to investigate his brother’s murder, Ivan. Flashbacks reveal not only the mysterious circumstances surrounding the murder, but also the intriguing sexual relationship of Alex’s lover Juliette (Laurence Cote) and her philosophy professor, Marie (Catherine Deneuve).

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.82:1, exhibits generally natural color fidelity with natural fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. Sometimes colors look a little greenish. Noise and grain are sometimes apparent, with occasional distracting artifacts. Images are generally sharp and detailed, but sometimes wanting. Shadow detail is mediocre. Subtitles are cut off at the bottom of widescreen monitors.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is nicely produced with excellent narrative quality and natural sounding dialogue. Surround envelopment is mostly subtle with some sound effects.
