WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Roan Group has released an exclusive gold LaserDisc in celebration of Orson Welles’ The Trial, based on the novel by Franz Kafka. Anthony Perkins is brilliant as Josef K, the Everyman character victimized and arrested by totalitarian officers for an unexplained crime. Represented by “The Advocate” (Orson Welles), Josef stands up against the system that condemns him. Despite extraordinary honors of his first film, Citizen Kane, Welles once proclaimed, “Say what you like, but The Trial is the best film I ever made.”

LaserDisc Picture:
The black and white picture, matted at 1.60:1, is slightly dark throughout with poor contrast. Images are generally wanting in sharpness and detail with mediocre shadow detail. Noise and artifacts are apparent throughout. Nonetheless, The Roan Group’s is the best transfer of the film available.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished monaural that is sometimes unintelligible with seriously out-of-sync dialogue.
