WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The only widescreen LaserDisc in the Burt Lancaster double feature with Apache is The Kentuckian, a spirited frontier adventure set in the 1820s. Based upon the novel “The Gabriel Horn,” by Felix Holt and featuring Walter Matthau in his debut film, Burt Lancaster stars as Big Eli Wakefield, a brawny Kentuckian travelling with his son (Donald McDonald) through the wilderness to start a new life in Texas. Along the way they are joined by Hannah (Dianne Foster), a beautiful young bound woman, and they use their riverboat money to pay her debt. But Big Eli must make the money back by working for his crooked brother (John McIntire), betting against crafty gamblers and a fist-fighting, whip-wielding merchant (Matthau).

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture looks dated with inconsistent and undersaturated color fidelity with muted fleshtones. Images are wanting in sharpness and detail, but shadow detail is generally good. Color intensity and hue shifts with nearly every scene change is distracting. Noise and artifacts are apparent throughout. The picture is framed at 2.32:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished mono which is distorted and compressed.
