WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Flashdance is the 1980s hit about Alex Owens (Jennifer Beals), a gifted young performer just starting out on the banks of New York City. Struggling to make her way without any formal education, Alex works hard as a welder by day and as a dancer by night—at a less than idyllic nightclub. Still, through trying times Alex never gives up her determination to realize her true dreams of making it into the Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1, exhibits a generally natural look throughout with good color fidelity. Fleshtones are accurate with rich and warm colors and deep, solid blacks. Images are generally sharp and detailed, but sometimes inconsistent. Some of the dance scene close-ups exhibit impressive sharpness, while other times, a soft, hazy focus is apparent. There is some slight noise and minor artifacts throughout.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack’s music energy is terrific. Both the Dolby® Digital discrete and PCM matrix sound virtually identical, being produced from the original 4.0 printmaster, although the discrete has a slightly wider soundstage. Otherwise, both versions sound predominately mono.
