WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the characters created by Jay Ward, George Of The Jungle is a stylishly funny comedy that begins with a safari in the heart of the African jungle, searching for the mythical White Ape of Ape Mountain. On the expedition is Ursula Stanhope (Leslie Mann), a San Francisco socialite and her obnoxious fiancé Lyle (Thomas Haden Church). When Ursula is “saved” from the mouth of a lion by none other than the White Ape himself—George of the Jungle (Brendan Fraser)—she learns that he is an innocent klutz with a forest full of animal friends, including an intelligent, talking ape named “Ape” (John Cleese) and Shep, a peanut-loving pooch of an elephant. With hilarious tongue-in-cheek narration by Keith Scott, George Of The Jungle is truly an enjoyable family adventure for anyone with a sense of humor.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1, is exemplary in all aspects, especially with its incredible color fidelity, natural fleshtones and deep solid blacks. Images are extremely sharp and detailed with excellent contrast and shadow detail. There is absolutely no noise or artifacts to mar this beautiful transfer. The opening credit sequence features sharp and detailed animation with vibrant colors.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack is extremely strong and betters the PCM matrix in soundstage delineation, music score imaging, surround aggressiveness and discrete localization of effects and dialogue. The .1 low frequency effects are sporadic, but effective. The discrete really distinguishes itself toward the end of Chapter 16’s “Discovery Of The Heart,” with the narrator’s voice phantom imaged at center back surround. This is a really fun soundtrack with nice touches of split surround envelopment and a lively music score. Both soundtracks are exceptional sonic experiences, with the discrete being the preferred presentation.
