WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Winner of the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar® and Golden Globe in 1996, Kolya is the story of Louka, a confirmed bachelor and renowned cellist, who leads a playboy lifestyle with women. This comes to an abrupt halt when he reluctantly agrees to marry, as a favor to his friend. Unexpectedly, his new bride decides to leave him to be with her lover, leaving behind her five year-old son Kolya. The happy-go-lucky bachelor must now decide what to do with his newest roommate who alters his life beyond imagination.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.64:1 picture exhibits a slightly dark character upon the natural looking color fidelity. Fleshtones are accurate with warm colors and deep blacks. Shadow detail is mediocre with fairly good contrast. Interiors can sometimes seem a bit oversaturated. Images are wanting in sharpness and detail, but can sometimes seem well defined. The second line of subtitles are slightly cut off at the bottom of widescreen monitors, but are still legible.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack has a beautiful music score with nicely produced dialogue and excellent spatial integration. Surround is mosly subtle, but often effective.
