WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina tells the passionate story of two burning romances. Leo Tolstoy’s novel of love in 1880s Imperial Russia is brought to life with the story of Anna Karenina (Sophie Marceau), a beautiful married aristocrat who is constantly pursued by the handsome young Count Vronsky (Sean Bean). Her scandalous affair with Vronsky initially breaks the heart of the unworldly Princess Kitty (Mia Kirshner)—who adores the Count—and betrays Anna’s quiet, but concerned husband (James Fox), who, in return, will not grant her a divorce or a chance to see their son. Levin (Alfred Molina), a simple, but dignified, landowner finally wins the heart of Kitty—nurturing her until she comes to truly love him. This film beautifully combines the two painful romances on spectacular location in Russia.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, framed at 2.35:1, exhibits absolutely gorgeous quality with incredible color fidelity. Colors are rich and vibrant with natural fleshtones and pure, deep blacks. Contrast is excellent with superb shadow detail. Images are always sharp and detailed and perfectly focused. There is no noise or apparent artifacts for a picture perfect experience that fully complements the intricate set and costume designs.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
Both the Dolby® Digital discrete and PCM matrix Dolby Surround soundtrack versions are exquisite with a full orchestral score that achieves perfect imaging with a deep and wide soundstage. Special sound effects are notable with excellent spatial dimension and discrete surround presence, often with aggressive envelopment. Bass extension is deep and powerful with effective .1 low frequency effects. Dialogue is completely natural sounding with excellent spatial integration. The discrete version achieves better definition in its spatial dileneation with a slightly wider music and effects soundstage, though the matrix version often produces a more spatial ambient character that is more open sounding. This is a wonderful soundtrack that perfectly complements this magnificent film.
