WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Liar Liar is a funny and emotional story about a man who is torn between the seduction of materialism and the love of his son. Fletcher Reede (Jim Carrey) is a successful lawyer, but an unreliable father. His five year old son, Max (Justin Cooper), has learned through time to take Fletcher’s promises with a grain of salt—and when he blows out the candles on his birthday cake, wishes his dad will not tell a lie for one day. Miraculously, his innocent wish comes true and, for the next 24 hours, Fletcher can’t lie to save his life. From the moment Maz blows out the candles, the comedic talents of Jim Carrey come alive as Fletcher tries to say anything but what is really on his mind. An outstanding supporting cast—with the talents of Swoosie Kurtz, Cary Elwes and Jennifer Tilly—adds to the spirited comedy.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1, exhibits a natural quality throughout. Images are sharp and detailed with excellent shadow detail and contrast. Color fidelity is superb, with fully saturated colors, natural fleshtones and deep solid blacks. Only the slightest noise is apparent, with some minor artifacts, but nothing that is distracting from this hilarious movie.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The DTS® Digital Surround soundtrack sounds essentially the same as the Dolby® Digital LaserDisc, but with the slightest richer texture and low level ambience recreation. Dialogue sounds natural throughout and the music score is nicely recorded, though sometimes veiled in presence. Surround presence is generally subtle throughout.
