WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel “Tainted Evidence” by Robert Daley, Sidney Lumet’s 40th film Night Falls On Manhattan stars Andy Garcia as cop-turned-assistant D.A. Sean Casey, who finds himself in a dark, compromising and political justice system. When his father, Liam Casey (Ian Holm), is seriously wounded in a botched raid against Harlem’s most wanted drug lord, district attorney Morgenstern (Ron Leibman) assigns Sean to the case. Pit against Sam Vigoda (Richard Dreyfuss), a dirty defense attorney with plans to expose police corruption, Sean embarks on a search for the truth—one that forces him to question his faith in the law and his place in a system where justice is the ultimate con.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 picture exhibits excellent quality. Color fidelity is exemplary with natural fleshtones, warm colors and deep blacks. Shadow detail is superb. Images are always sharp and detailed with no apparent noise or artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack features spatially rendered dialogue, though the overall character is monaural. Surround stereo presence is limited to the music score, though the jazz flavored score sounds quite nice.
