WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The space odyssey from 2001 continues in 2010; the year we make contact. Based on the novel by Arthur C. Clark, an expedition team of Russian and American scientists set out for the moons of Jupiter to investigate the abandoned Discovery spacecraft and its sole known survivor, HAL 9000. Tensions rise between Dr. Heywood Floyd (Roy Scheider) and the Soviet captain, Tanya Kirbuk (Helen Mirren), while the Earth below them is on the brink of nuclear self-destruction. 2010 dares to answer the probing questions left behind in Stanley Kubrick’s mysterious masterpiece.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, framed at 2.30:1, exhibits natural looking exteriors with good color fidelity, natural fleshtones and deep blacks. Interior shadow detail is poor with a slight brown tint. Images are wanting in sharpness and detail, generally lacking definition. The space scenes are only mediocre, lacking the pure blacks apparent in Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (Issue 26).

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack exhibits a sweeping soundstage with a haunting music score, natural dialogue and directional sound effects. Bass extension is deeper and more powerful on the discrete version and is effectively engaging.
