WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Nominated for four Academy Awards® and based on D.H. Lawrence’s controversial classic novel, Women In Love is a complex exploration of sexuality and romance. Having grown up sheltered in the society of a 1920s English mining town, Gurdrun (Glenda Jackson in her first Oscar®-winning performance) and Ursula (Jennie Linden) Brangwen have yet to experience a sexual awakening. But as their liaisons with a notorious playboy (Alan Bates) and a brooding philanderer (Oliver Reed) move from heated encounters to mature relationships, Gudrun and Ursula learn more than they ever dared imagine about being in love. Jackson also stars in the 1989 sequel The Rainbow.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.66:1, exhibits generally good color fidelity, with rich, vibrant colors, natural fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. Images are generally sharp and detailed with mediocre shadow detail and contrast. Exterior scenes often look very natural, however, interior scenes look “plugged up.” Noise and sometimes distracting artifacts are apparent throughout.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished monaural with constant background hiss and distorted sound.
