WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Winner of four Academy Awards® in 1976, Network is Sidney Lumet’s wickedly funny satire of the TV news media. When Howard Beale (Peter Finch, posthumous Best Actor Oscar®-winner)—the longtime news anchor for the fourth-place network UBS-TV—is fired, he suffers a violent breakdown on the air. Ironically, the mishap boosts the network’s ratings and he is rehired as the “mad prophet of the airwaves.” Thus, Howard becomes a pawn for a ruthless programmer (Faye Dunaway in an outstanding award-winning performance) and a shark-like vice president (Robert Duvall), who maniacally exploit his insanity. “Network” is even more compelling than when it was first released because it seems barely ahead of news media today.

LaserDisc Picture:
The dated-looking picture, matted at 1.85:1, exhibits some slight oversaturation in color fidelity. Otherwise, fleshtones are generally natural. Interior scenes are often dull, occasionally seeming a bit plugged-up. Images are wanting in sharpness and detail with mediocre, undefined shadow detail. Noise is apparent, as well as minor artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished mono that sounds strident and distorted.
