WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel by Vincent Patrick, The Pope Of Greenwich Village is a delightful comedy about cousins Charlie (Mickey Rourke) and Paulie (Eric Roberts), recently fired from their jobs at a classy restaurant and both out to realize their dreams of making it big in New York’s Little Italy. Charlie’s desperation for money grows when he learns his girlfriend (Daryl Hannah) is pregnant. Paulie is conviced he’s got an answer to their problems by investing in a future “champion” racehorse. But for their investment, they must steal the money from the Mafia godfather of Greenwich Village (Burt Young) to pay off the loan. They better hope they don’t get caught, because of they do, not even Paulie’s uncle (Tony Musante) in the Mafia can save them.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1, exhibits images that are generally wanting in sharpness and detail. Color fidelity is generally good, exhibiting natural fleshtones, rich and warm colors and deep blacks. Contrast and shadow detail are mediocre. Noise, grain, especially in the darker scenes, and minor artifacts are apparent throughout.
