WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
From screenwriter Thomas McGuane (92 In The Shade) Rancho Deluxe is a quirky comedic western starring Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterson as Jack McKee and Cecil Colson—two low-down dirty cattle rustlers in Montana’s Big Sky Country. When they’re not busy shooting down old John Brown’s (Clifton James) prize-winning bulls, Jack and Cecil are causing a ruckus at bars and on dates. No longer roughing it up in the wild west, these pickup truck driving, horseback riding troublemakers are joined by an outstanding supporting cast that includes Slim Pickens, Harry Dean Stanton, Richard Bright and Jimmy Buffett.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1, exhibits an irritatingly unnatural dark character throughout. Color fidelity is oversaturated and the dark overtone blends the colors, making many scenes appear “muddy” and plugged-up. Contrast and shadow detail are extremely poor. If the film was a little brighter, color fidelity might seem more natural. Noise and artfacts are apparent for an overall unappealing visual experience.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished and distorted monaural.
