WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
From a novel by Vilhelm Mober, The Emigrants tells the story of a group of Swedes who struggle with the rocky and infertile environment of their native farmland. They dream of a more forgiving land—a place that would offer more promise. That dream leads them to take the arduous journey to America and the rich soil of Minnesota. Nominated for four Academy Awards® including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. At times, as slow as the oxen that plow the fields, however, this epic is well worth the effort.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture exhibits generally natural color fidelity with accurate fleshtones, rich colors and deep, undefined blacks. Interior scenes often lack clarity and natural openness, but exteriors are more natural. Images are often wanting in sharpness and detail, sometimes appearing hazy. Contrast and shadow delineation are mediocre. Minor noise and artifacts are apparent throughout for a mediocre visual

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished and compressed monaural.
