WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Sonatine combines graphic violence with bits of comedy in this action film about an aging Yakuza (a hired killer) who yearns for retirement but is then dispatched, along with others in his racket, to resolve a long simmering gang war in Okinawa.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 picture exhibits generally good color fidelity, with slightly brownish fleshtones and deep blacks. Images are generally sharp, but wanting in greater detail and definition. Minor noise is apparent, but artifacts are not distracting. Contrast and shadow delineation are mediocre as is the overall experience, which is wanting in clarity.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Surround encoded soundtrack uses largely production sound with generally natural sounding dialogue, and both effective aggressive and subtle surround. The music score is seemingly infrequent but sounds generally satisfying with effective complement to some humorous sequences. What works well is the subtle enveloping sense of ambience that makes for an enjoyable experience.
