WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Hush is a sinister, psychological thriller that stars Jessica Lange as Jackson Baring’s (Jonathan Schaech) overbearing mother, Martha. When Jackson takes his newfound love home for Christmas, Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow) is awestruck by Martha’s sprawling Kentucky horse ranch. But beneath Martha’s genteel smile, lurks a woman with an agenda—to bring her son back to Kentucky to take over his birthright. The one threat to her plan is Helen, whose dream of domestic happiness is about to become a nightmare.

DVD To LaserDisc Comparison:
The anamorphic widescreen DVD, when viewed through the component video output, exhibits an incredibly natural picture that is dramatically sharper and more detailed than the otherwise exemplary LaserDisc. Both versions were sourced from a superb Sony HD transfer and deliver extraordinary visual impact. Colors are accurately rendered with exceptionally natural fleshtones, richly hued colors and deep, solid blacks. The DVD exhibits absolutely no chroma noise for a picture with excellent contrast. The letterbox and anamorphic DVD and LaserDisc are matted at 1.85:1 The Dolby® Digital discrete soundtrack, on both the DVD and the LaserDisc, is a 5.0 mix and sounds very similar to the LaserDisc matrix PCM Dolby Surround soundtrack. In the suspense-filled scenes, surrounds are aggressively rendered with the discrete mix delivering split surrounds and a slightly wider soundstage presence. The music is a dramatic element throughout and is nicely recorded with excellent imaging. Dialogue often sounds natural with excellent spatial integration. Bass sounds full and very natural, but there are no .1 low frequency effects.
