DVD To LaserDisc Comparison:
The anamorphic DVD picture quality is outstanding and exhibits full color saturation, natural fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. On the LaserDisc, the visual qualities are exemplary, but no match for the DVD’s color accuracy, lack of chroma noise, and vertical and horizontal resolution attributes delivered through the component video output. Colors on the DVD are more detailed and overall contrast is improved and line structure is dramatically reduced due to the anamorphic vertical resolution. Shadow detail is excellent on both versions. The LaserDisc and DVD letterbox aspect ratios are framed at 2.35:1, while the DVD anamorphic version 2.20:1. The LaserDisc’s matrix Dolby® Surround soundtrack is no match for the Dolby Digital discrete 5.1 mix on either LaserDisc or DVD or the DTS® Digital Surround LaserDisc, which has an impressive aggressive surround soundfield that projects a three-dimensional holosonic experience. Bass extension is superb and the discrete’s .1 low frequency effects push even deeper for an exciting dynamic presence. Surround is aggressive, but compared to the matrix, the discrete versions perform more effectively with very dimensional split surround effects. Of particular note is the DTS Digital Surround soundtrack, which sounds clearer throughout.
