WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Beneath the sun-kissed facades of the sprawling mansions in Wild Things, lurks a twisted tale of revenge, sex and murder. Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards) has more than a passing schoolgirl crush on her sexy guidance counselor, Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon). But after Kelly confesses that Sam sexually assaulted her, it isn’t long before a social outsider (Neve Campbell) comes forward with the same allegations. Further developments unfold under the watchful eyes of two detectives (Kevin Bacon and Daphne Rubin-Vega), who uncover a twisting plot.

DVD To LaserDisc Comparison:
Both LaserDisc and DVD picture qualities look fantastic. Color fidelity is excellent with natural fleshtones, rich and vibrant colors and deep, solid blacks. But the anamorphic DVD, when viewed in the component video output, delivers more fully saturated colors. Images are sharp and detailed on both versions, but fine background detail and increased resolution are apparent on the DVD. Contrast and shadow detail are both exemplary. The DVD letterbox aspect ratio is framed at 2.35:1, while the anamorphic version is 2.23:1. The LD is 2.40:1. The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack on both the DVD and LaserDisc is nicely developed, as is the matrix PCM LaserDisc soundtrack. Surround envelopment is often superb, especially the matrix rendering which generally sounds more spatial with better low level ambient resolution. When split surrounds are present on the discrete version, they effectively enhance the soundfield dimension. Dialogue generally sounds natural and spatially integrated, except when ADR-processing is obvious. The music score is terrific and very well recorded. Bass extension is deep and natural sounding on the matrix version with the .1 LFE delivering better depth.
