WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
A real treat for fans of the award-winning television series, The X Files finds Special Agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) closer than they have ever been to unlocking the secrets behind government conspiracies. The series’ plot elements and characters were incorporated into the film.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, framed at 2.35:1, is absolutely stunning with its very natural image quality. Color fidelity is accurately rendered with natural fleshtones, richly hued colors and deep, solid blacks. Shadow detail is well delineated with subtle gradation of shades in the picture black areas. Contrast is excellent as well. And the picture is pristine with no apparent noise or artifacts for an exemplary visual LaserDisc presentation.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital discrete 5.1 soundtrack is a bit inconsistent in sonic character. The Dolby Digital’s high frequency component sometimes sounds muted and dialogue, especially Scully’s during the opening scenes, sounds muffled, while the matrix PCM soundtrack sounds extended with clearer dialogue presence. Both versions sound spatially dimensional, especially the matrix PCM which recreates a much more coherent soundfield image. The Dolby Digital, while producing effective split surround effects, is less integrated spatially. The matrix PCM also reproduces low level ambience sounds, which are non-existent or virtually inaudible on the Dolby Digital version. Otherwise the music score is well recorded with an expanded soundstage and a very aggressive surround presence that is effectively engaging. Dialogue is often ADR-produced and poorly integrated, but otherwise spatially suggestive. Bass extension is sometimes deep and powerful with effective .1 LFE, and surrounds, especially the matrix’s, extend to below 25Hz. The Dolby Digital soundtrack, while at times engaging dimensionally, does not quite match the holosonic and dynamic sounding matrix PCM.
