Story Synopsis:
Volcano is the latest in explosive natural disaster Hollywood blockbusters. Los Angeles, a city which has become almost a byword for disaster, is about to experience its most cataclysmic event ever, when a vent in the Earth’s crust causes a volcanic eruption under the La Brea Tar Pits! An unprepared city faces its worst nightmare as an endless stream of fiery, deadly lava creeps across traffic-choked streets. Mike Roark (Tommy Lee Jones), chief of the emergency services team battling the volcano, joins forces with Dr. Amy Barnes (Anne Heche), the seismologist who knows how absurd it is to try to stop the volcano’s deadly power.
LaserDisc Picture:
The picture appears to be sourced from the same transfer as the THX®-quality assured LaserDisc reviewed in Issue 27. While this LaserDisc is not THX-certified, the visual experience is just as exciting in all aspects. The aspect ratio is 1.82:1.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The DTS® Digital Surround discrete 5.1 soundtrack is very spatial sounding, and especially thunderous with dynamic swings. The sound design is superb with creative emphasis on spatial soundfield effects that put you in the movie. As with the Dolby® Digital LaserDisc, there are plenty of split surrounds and directional surround effects. The DTS coding sounds harmonically fuller with better interchannel delineation and a greater sense of spatial coherency. Bass extends to way below 25Hz with incredible .1 LFE power. All the sound elements, particularly the expansive music score, are well recorded and spatially integrated for an incredible sonic experience.
