WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based the novel “Heaven Has No Favorites,” by Erich Maria Renarque’s Bobby Deerfield features Al Pacino in the title role as a spectacular Grand Prix race car driver. Deerfield’s dangerous career keeps him close to the finish line of life, but when he meets Lillian Morelli (Marthe Keller)—a terminally ill, but uninhibited woman—he is ready to give it all up for her. Their bittersweet romance leads them across Europe, and the more time Bobby spends with the quirky Lillian, the more he emerges from his deeply withdrawn emotions. Keller shines in the role of the special woman who turns Deerfield’s life around.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture exhibits poor color fidelity with reddish hued fleshtones and grayish-blacks. Overall resolution also is poor. Images lack sharpness and detail and appear out of focus. Poor contrast contributes to a dark picture with no shadow detail. Minor noise and artifacts are apparent as well for a poorly rendered visual experience. The Panavision® picture is framed at 2.35:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished monaural that sometimes sounds distorted and irritatingly bright.
