WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the novella by Thomas Mann, Death In Venice is a lavish, slow moving story about the aging, distinguished composer Gustav Aschenbach (Dirk Bogarde) and his obsession with ideal beauty. Aschenbach’s quiet observations lead his eyes to a young boy—and he instantly loses himself to a painful passion. Every passing glance nearly brings him to his knees, but the love that Aschenbach feels for the boy will ultimately carry him to his doom.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, framed at 2.45:1, looks dated and exhibits subdued colors that lack detail and clarity. Though slightly dull, colors sometimes are nicely rendered, with generally natural fleshtones, though blacks are undefined. Images are generally sharp and detailed, but lack fine background resolution and delineation. Minor noise is apparent, especially in the darker interior scenes, as well as artifacts. Contrast and shadow detail are mediocre, sometimes seeming a bit too contrasted with lost visual information in the darkest of scenes. The sides are slightly cropped.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished monaural with slight background noise.
