WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Kingpin is the off-beat comedy of gross-out humor and bowling, from the makers of Dumb And Dumber. Roy Munson (Harrelson), one-time champion bowler, now big-time loser after his bowling hand is amputated, finds a promising protégé in Ishmael (Quaid), a naive Amish farmboy. Soon Ishmael delves into worldly corruption with Munson, as they head to compete in a million dollar tournament against the narcisistic Ernie McCraken (Murray).

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, framed at 2.32:1, exhibits the same pleasing quality as the LD in Issue 24.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The 5.1 discrete DTS® Digital Surround soundtrack is spatially limited as was the Dolby® Digital soundtrack reviewed in Issue 24. At times, the music scoring delivers an aggressive surround presence with added .1 low frequency effects. The dialogue, as previously reviewed, often sounds spatially integrated, other than the ADR-produced variety. The music score sounds more harmonically rich and defined with the DTS coding. Much of the soundtrack is mono focused and wanting in spatial dimension. But sonic clarity, harmonic structure and low level resolution is improved in this soundtrack.
