WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel by Allen Drury, the thrilling and dramatic Advise & Consent is Otto Preminger’s engrossing political examination of the bigwigs in Washington. When the President appoints a candidate for the Secretary of State position, he creates a wave of controversy, dividing the senate. In Advise & Consent, deals become extortion, closets reveal skeletons and careers are crushed—a story that is familiar even today.

LaserDisc Picture:
The black and white picture exhibits a mediocre gray scale that resembles newspaper grays. There are some inconsistencies, however, because some scenes exhibit deep blacks and white whites. Images are wanting in sharpness and detail, lacking definition and clarity. Contrast and shadow delineation are mediocre, with images often appearing too contrasted and losing visual information in the darkness. There is noise in most scenes, and artifacts are apparent throughout. The Panavision® aspect ratio is framed at 2.32:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished monaural with slight background noise.
