WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based upon the novel by Alexandre Dumas, The Man In The Iron Mask tells the tale of two brothers (Leonardo DiCaprio in a dual role): one who becomes the spoiled, self-serving King of France, and the other a carefree fighter who is raised by The Three Musketeers. Includes audio commentary by writer/director Randall Wallace.

LaserDisc Picture:
The LaserDisc, even when compared to the anamorphically enhanced DVD reviewed in Issue 30, exhibits excellent picture quality throughout. When viewed alone, images are extremely sharp and detailed with convincingly rendered textures and fine detail even in backgrounds. Colors exhibit excellent definition and superb clarity. Shadow detail and contrast are excellent, exhibiting a natural, subtle gradiation between darkness and picture black. Costumes look great with fiery reds and royal blues that pop from the screen. The aspect ratio is 1.85:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack sounds the same as the superb discrete soundtrack on the DVD. The soundtrack is often wonderfully spatial with an aggressive surround presence that is at times directionalized and orchestral rich. Bass extension is excellent, even the roar of cannon shots punctuated in the .1 LFE channel.
