WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Hungarian immigrant Karchy Jonas (Brad Renfro) is desperately trying to fit in with the “cool” crowd in Telling Lies In America. When he’s hired on as an assistant to slick rock ‘n roll disc jockey, Billy Magic (wickedly portrayed by Kevin Bacon), he thinks he’s got it made. But when he discovers that Billy’s involved in payola and that he’s being used as an unwitting accomplice, Karchy realizes that being cool is not as important as he thought.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 2.25:1 picture is oversaturated and slightly dark with orangeish fleshtones, vibrant colors and deep, undefined blacks. Images are sharp and detailed, with nicely rendered contrast and shadow delineation; although sometimes wanting in visual information in the darkest scenes. The picture appears slightly plugged up, and noise is apparent throughout, though there are no artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Surround soundtrack is pleasant with moments of effective aggressive surround envelopment. A large part of the sound is sourced from actual production sound with natural ambience. Dialogue sounds generally natural in those scenes with excellent spatial integration. The music score is nicely dynamic and wraps into the surround channel.
