WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The stark, ice-covered Scottish coast is the setting for The Winter Guest, an emotionally-charged story of a small town in the grips of a frigid-cold winter. Frances (Emma Thompson), a local photographer, is grieving over the death of her husband, when her mother Elspeth (Thompson’s real-life mother Phylida Law) unexpectedly shows up to help her fragile daughter regain her emotional strength. The frozen landscape will chill you to the bone, but the emotional story will warm your soul.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, matted at 1.85:1 is stunning in naturalness. Color fidelity is superb with accurate fleshtones, rich and warm colors and deep, solid blacks. The transfer is impeccable with excellent contrast and shadow detail. There is no apparent noise or artifacts for a pristine picture.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Surround soundtrack is limited in spatial dimension, especially in interior scenes, but at times envelopment is effectively subtle. The music is delicate and provides moments of aggressive surround and bass. Dialogue is exemplary in naturalness and spatial integration. This is a quiet, but engaging soundtrack.
