WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Christopher Walken stars in Brainstorm as a man who has created a device that can record and play back human thoughts. But he soon finds himself trying to prevent the machine from falling into the wrong hands.

LaserDisc Picture:
The LaserDisc, when compared to the non-anamorphic DVD reviewed in Issue 29, exhibits similar imaging qualities. The picture is inconsistent with an overly dark appearance and poor bluish shadow delineation and contrast. By comparison, the LaserDisc is overly soft and slightly hazy. Noise and artifacts are apparent, especially in the darker scenes. Depending on the scene, the picture exhibits an aspect ratio varying between 1.85:1 and 2.40:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
Compared to the DVD which had a Dolby® Surround matrix soundtrack encoded in Dolby Digital, this new Dolby Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack is superior in spatial dimension and directional sound effects. Overall, split surround engagement is quite effective compared to the mono surround on the DVD. While aggressive surround is holosonic in character, largely the sound collapses to monaural. Bass is occasionally effective, especially when .1 LFE enhancement is engaged.
