WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel by Pierre Boulle, Planet Of The Apes is a cautionary tale on the destructive nature of man and where it could lead. A group of astronauts crash on an unknown planet where apes rule the land and the mute, uncivilized humans are treated like animals.

LaserDisc Picture:
While dated, the picture, framed at 2.30:1, exhibits a natural color balance that is rich with accurately rendered fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. Sometimes fleshtones appear slightly brownish. Images are sharp and detailed, with good contrast and shadow delineation. Artifacts are apparent throughout, but there is no seriously distracting noise for a picture that is quite solid throughout.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The original 1968 film soundtrack was in stereo. This THX®-supervised soundtrack has been re-mastered in Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete. The matrix PCM counterpart is superior in sonic character and bass extension. The discrete’s .1 LFE enhancement is extremely limited, but effective. Surround envelopment is at times aggressive and a product of music and sound effects, but there are no distinguishing spatial differences between the electronically manipulated discrete split surrounds and the mono matrix surround presence. Dialogue is poorly spatially integrated.
