WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the book by Charlton Ogburn, Jr., Merrill’s Marauders follows the wartime exploits of the 5307 Composite Unit during World War II. Led by Brigadier General Frank Merrill (Jeff Chandler) and capably manned by Stock (Ty Hardin) and Chowhound (the incomparable Will Hutchins), the 5307 was a group of young, yet experienced foot soldiers who took on one “impossible” assignment after another, with little time to catch a breath. Their first assignment: to regain the region of Burma, a vital linkup area for the enemy. A excellent portrayal of World War II combat action that makes you feel as if you’re slinking through the weeds alongside Chowhound, Bullseye and Stock.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture, framed at 2.35:1, appears dated, but with generally natural colors. Some scenes appear subdued with blacks that lack true depth, but fleshtones are accurate, with natural greener. Images are generally sharp and detailed, with some image overenhancement. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered, but there is noise and occasional artifacts apparent. While dated, the picture, which takes place exclusively in exteriors, is somewhat nicely rendered.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is undistinguished monaural with background noise.
