WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Firestorm is a raging action adventure that marks the directorial debut for Academy Award®-winning cinematographer Dean Semler. Howie Long stars as Jesse Graves, a fearless firefighting “smokejumper” who parachutes into the middle of a forest inferno, inadvertently exposing a gang of escaped convicts disguised as firefighters.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture exhibits excellent shadow delineation and contrast. Color fidelity is exceptional with natural fleshtones, rich and vibrant colors and deep, solid blacks. There is virtually no noise or artifacts apparent, except in some scenes with the fires and smoke. Images are sharp and detailed with nicely rendered fine detail and texture. This is a sure-fire winner when it comes to visual quality on LaserDisc. The aspect ratios are framed at 2.30:1.

DVD To LaserDisc Comparison:
This is truly an explosive soundtrack of exceptional holosonic quality. The Dolby® Digital and DTS® Digital Surround discrete 5.1 soundtracks as well as the matrix PCM soundtrack are exciting and won’t disappoint. The DTS Digital Surround version especially is incredibly dynamic surpassing the other two in clarity and resolution. Our dynamic measurements on the Dorrough 6-channel meter bridge have never measured such dynamic intensity in a soundtrack as delivered by this DTS soundstorm. This is one of the most challenging soundtracks in dynamics and low frequency that your system will ever be put through. Caution is advised. Even the surround channels are pressed to deliver below 20Hz at extremely high SPL. While the Dolby Digital is coded from the same source printmaster, the sound is less precise and delineated, especially interchannel separation and low level ambience recreation. The matrix is excellent but cannot match the spatial delineation of the two discrete soundtracks.
