WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
When starting quarterback Lance Harbor (Walker) sustains a season-ending injury, bench-warmer Jonathan Moxon (Van Der Beek) suddenly discovers what it’s like to be a star player in the football-crazed town of West Caanan Texas in Varsity Blues. Facing the pressures of his win-at-all-costs coach (Voight), his family, a golddigging cheerleader and the entire community, “Mox” must decide whether fame and power can exist with personal integrity.

LaserDisc Picture:
The LaserDisc exhibits fully saturated, vibrant colors that sometimes appear slightly oversaturated. Fleshtones are slightly reddish throughout. Images are sharp and detailed, with nicely rendered contrast and shadow delineation. The nighttime football game scenes are exceptional, with eye-popping colors, especially the bright blue jerseys, and deep pure blacks. There is minor noise apparent throughout the 1.85:1 LaserDisc.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The matrix Dolby Surround PCM soundtrack delivers a fine holosonic performance. The soundstage is wonderfully expansive, with the right combination of music and sound effects. The dialogue recording is first-rate: natural-sounding, free of excessive sibilance, and quite well-matched with the visual environments.
