WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Soldier stars Kurt Russell as Sgt. Todd, a top ranked intergalactic war machine who was raised from birth to be the vicious killer that he is today. However, new advances in biological engineering have made Sgt. Todd and others like him obsolete. When he and his group, led by their superior Captain Church (Gary Busey) are confronted by this new generation of warrior, they are defeated and left for dead on a distant planet. But Sgt. Todd has other ideas in the fiery sci-fi adventure tale.

LaserDisc Picture:
A considerable amount of noise is apparent. The LaserDisc appears slightly orange throughout the color balance, especially effecting fleshtones. Images are sharp and detailed, and contrast and shadow delineation are superb. The LaserDisc measures 2.40:1

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack projects a dynamic holosonic soundfield experience at tremendous SPL levels. The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete and matrix PCM soundtracks are first rate. Surround envelopment is aggressive and effectively delineates a three-dimensional space. The Dolby Digital version, when fully engaged, delivers a heightened sense of split surround dimension. Bass extension is deep and powerful to below 25Hz, and effectively enhanced with .1 LFE in the discrete. The music score is expansive and well recorded. Dialogue is nicely integrated as well. This sonic experience fully uses aggressive surround delineation, especially the 5.1 palette.

DVD To LaserDisc Comparison:
A considerable amount of noise is apparent on the LaserDisc, while the anamorphically enhanced DVD, viewed in component video, exhibits a solid picture throughout. DVD colors are fully saturated with natural fleshtones, rich colors and deep, solid blacks. The LaserDisc appears slightly orange throughout the color balance, especially effecting fleshtones. Images are sharp and detailed, particularly on the DVD, which exhibits minute detail and superb clarity. Contrast and shadow delineation are superb on both versions, but a finer amount of visual information is apparent in the darkest scenes on the DVD. The LaserDisc, anamorphic and letterbox DVD measure 2.40:1 The soundtrack projects a dynamic holosonic soundfield experience at tremendous SPL levels. Both the DVD and LaserDisc Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete and matrix PCM soundtracks are first rate. Surround envelopment is aggressive and effectively delineates a three-dimensional space.
